GOP vs. Women: the Pence Amendment on Planned Parenthood and Title X

The GOP opposes governmental intrusion into private affairs when it comes to regulations that would prevent corporations from polluting our ground water, oceans, and air, but it’s all for governing women’s bodies and reproductive health care.  The U.S. House of Representatives just passed an amendment that would eliminate all funding for Planned Parenthood.   This amendment would also would also deny Title X funds to any reproductive health care organization or facility that provides abortion.  The Hyde Amendment already prevents any federal money from going to pay for abortions.  This legislation attempts to deny funding to any facility that uses private funds to pay for the termination of unwanted or dangerous pregnancies.

It is clear that Mike Pence (R-Indiana), who sponsored the amendment that passed today, and the cronies who voted for it, are more interested in controlling women’s health care choices than they are in preventing abortion.  Planned Parenthood prevents approximately 621,000 unintended pregnancies every single year through education and birth control services. It serves more than 1.2 million people annually.  Many of these people have no health care and would not receive medical attention without the safe haven that Planned Parenthood provides.  The overwhelming majority of its work is devoted to offering gynecological care, cancer screenings, STD screenings, tests, and counseling.  Only 3 per cent of its resources go towards abortion.

So what are Mike Pence and the reactionary politicians who support his agenda really up in arms about?  They obviously do not care about indigent women. Perhaps they would be quite happy to let them die of undetected cancers, or STDs, or pregnancy?  They’ve certainly shown their hand in their opposition to all abortion, even those that are necessary to save the life of the mother.   Why oppose birth control and sex education, which study after study has proven to be far more effective in preventing abortion than the abstinence-only programs?

These guys–and the brainwashed and corrupted women who vote for and with them–oppose Planned Parenthood because it actively informs, empowers, and mobilizes millions of women to make their own choices about their sexual and reproductive lives.  Planned Parenthood helps women who, because they are poor and have no health insurance, would otherwise be unable to work to support themselves, go to school, and stay out of relationships of dependency on abusive and controlling men.  By providing gynecological care, preventing unwanted pregnancies, and screening for cancer and STDs, Planned Parenthood enables millions of women to become financially and psychologically  independent.  Isn’t this exactly what the right-wing is most afraid of?

[…] The Pence amendment:  the continuing resolution on the national budget, which was passed by the House, includes an amendment that would eliminate all funding for Title X family planning, even though none of this money funds abortions.   The Congresswomen and men who voted for this resolution officially declared their opposition to programs that currently provide poor women with gynecological care, pap smears, HIV and other STD testing, cancer screenings, contraception and information about safe sexual practices.
